Denver needlepoint group has projects tee’d up for 2015

The calendar of Denver’s oldest needlepoint group is filling up rapidly! Here’s what’s heading your way for the rest of 2015 from Colorado Columbine Chapter of the American Needlepoint Guild:

MAY 18:  Expect some help getting your Colorado Columbine Chapter name tag finished as we tackle this easy design by one of our own designer-members, Jennifer Riefenberg. Here is the link to instructions & threads.  Our president and programs chairs, Gloria & Barb, are preparing the canvas needed to work this project.  Check the thread list, bring 8″ x 8″ bars, pull some goodies from the ol’ stash, and come with needle loaded for some fun stitching! It’s a lovely columbine design that can certainly be varied by each stitcher.

Fancy a new magnet? Get a glittery, S-T-I-T-C-H magnet from ANG. See Julie S. at the MAY meeting to put in your order. Cost is just $20, checks made out to CCC-ANG, and the chapter will pick up postage.

JUNE 15:  You’ve seen him, fallen in love with him, signed up for him and now will create him:  Libby Sturdy’s ‘Mile High Santa,’ a charming, Colorado-themed design that will be taught by our president, Gloria. Here is her finished standup, is  below. Stitchers taking the class will be provided with an 18-count canvas that has a design already drawn. Stitch guide is included. There will be some surprises offered, so sayeth the grapevine, so be on time for this anticipated class!

JULY 20: Put the final flourishes onto your delightful ‘Mile High Santa’ and plan his display as… what, a standup? A framed piece for the mantel? The center of a holiday pillow? The choices are many, and yours.

AUGUST: Take a break from meetings, but never from stitching, right? No formal gathering, but plenty of lazy days for tackling that stash of WIPs! Make us proud!

SEPTEMBER 21: A delightful design, all sparkly and wintery, is planned for the fall months at CCC-ANG. See the piece, below, called ‘Snow Crystal Tree’ by Nancy’s Needle, which will be taught by Barb G.  Cost is $15 for directions and beads (!) and signups will be taken at meetings May-July. Design size is 8.3″ x 8.3″ on a 12″x12″ canvas.

OCTOBER 19: Last touches of ‘Snow Crystal Tree’ will be added — think beads and sparkles! This piece is a wonderful winter design, not necessarily holiday oriented, so it can be enjoyed all season.

NOVEMBER 16: It’s our tradition to enjoy a holiday gathering, so expect an enjoyable social event with your stitching friends, old and new!

DECEMBER: No meetings, but there may be a field trip or two in the works. Watch this space!

Colorado Columbine celebrates 40 years of needlepoint stitching

Six past presidents graced the annual dinner and kickoff to the 40th anniversary celebration for Colorado Columbine Chapter of the American Needlepoint Guild!  Wearing ruby red, the color symbolizing a 40th anniversary, the past presidents were called to the podium one by one to accept beautiful long-stemmed red roses from the president-elect, Gloria M., at far right in the photo above. The past presidents are, from left to right, Caela T., 1981-82; Barbara C., 1990; Maxine F., 1984-86 and 2001-03; Cynthia L., 2003-04; Vicki M., 2010-12; Lea K., 2013-15.

Stitchers past and present from all over the Denver metro area attended the annual dinner and installation of new officers. It was fun to see members from past years and do a bit of catching up. A sea of red color greeted all who arrived for the celebration. New members were added and visitors were warmly welcomed.

A cake graced the banquet table arranged by Janet C. and Barb G.:

Organize your needlepoint stash with new tips in January

It’s  January and time to think about organizing things around the house.  In keeping with this theme, we will be giving you some ideas on how to organize your needlework stash.  Barb G. will give tips and tricks and would love to have any and all of you share YOUR secrets for organizing threads, canvases, tools, books, WIP, etc.

Also, this month we will begin our year long project–Variations Sampler by Custom House Needle Arts.  The stitch books are finally in, and Christine Hause from the Stitching Shop will be at the meeting and have them for sale for $16.00.  She will also have the Gumnut threads that are used in the original sampler.  These gorgeous silk and wool threads are a little pricey, and we will talk about what  you can use in place of the suggested threads should you want to do this. You can download the picture of the sampler, thread list, schematic of the blocks HERE.   If you wish Barb to print you a copy of this information, please let her know–the cost  will be $1.00.

The sampler finishes at 12″x12″  on 18 count canvas.  You should use a piece of canvas either 16″x16″or 18″x18″ depending on whether you want a 2″ or 3″ border around the piece for framing or finishing into a pillow.

If you prefer to work on 14 count canvas, the piece will finish approximately  15 1/2″x 15 1/2″.  Again you need to leave either  an additional 2 or 3 inches on each side for finishing.

Also, The Stitching Shop has a TRUNK SHOW with 20 percent OFF this month, featuring these artists (& some stitch guides available):

Pat Thode

Catherine Blair

Brenda Palmer

Beth Robertson & Suzanne Howren

Barbara Bond

Needlepoint stitchers love a holiday party!

Colorado Columbine members enjoying their party. Colorado Columbine members enjoying their party.

In November each year, the membership of the Colorado Columbine Chapter of the American Needlepoint Guild enjoys a holiday party before everyone gets caught up in December’s activities.  Stitchers compare notes, get reacquainted, meet new people and feast on the goodies of the banquet table.  This year’s festivities were organized by Hospitality chair Janet C., who did a remarkable job and presented us with our best-ever smorgasbord!

Tempting desserts! Tempting desserts!

What could possibly top such a feast?

In a flash, stitchers would tell you  n-e-e-d-l-e-p-o-i-n-t!   So after a quick meeting conducted by president Lea K., stitchers got down to serious work on their projects. There were Christmas designs in progress, a stitcher hand-finishing a completed project, a correspondence course in play & other beautiful creations being completed. Below is a beautiful stocking containing imaginative stitches using beautiful threads:

Jane's stocking almost complete! Jane’s stocking almost complete!

Be sure to check out our Facebook page (click the link above right, SOCIAL / OUR FACEBOOK PAGE) for more holiday photos featuring our needlepoint handwork.

Also, don’t forget to visit our local needlepoint supporters, our ADVERTISERS (click on the tab at top), who are so helpful, for your needlepoint supplies.

Happy stitching, everyone, and we will see you all on the third Monday in January, 2015 (no meeting in December). We DO meet on the Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday.

October is a favorite needlepoint stitching month

October stitching is fun! October stitching is fun!

The weather is cooler, the garden projects have slowed, most needlepoint stitching groups are back in full swing after a summer hiatus.

In October, the board of Colorado Columbine Chapter of American Needlepoint Guild continues to consider a proposal to merge our chapter with another local needlepoint chapter.  It is vital that the membership at large makes its wishes known to the members of the board.  Feel free to call any member of the board to relay your thoughts on this important consideration, particularly if you were not present at the September general meeting. Click here to read the minutes:  General Meeting minutes of September 2014

It is also important to attend the next general meeting scheduled for Monday, October 20 at the Great Hall of Bethany Lutheran Church at 6:50 p.m.  It is much easier to communicate when members can meet face to face and discuss issues facing the group.

Our program in October will be the finishing process to create the Little Friendship Gift Boxes that we started in September.

So, lots on the agenda and lots of stitching to do, so plan to be on hand!

Needlepoint a pretty little 'Friendship Gift Box' in September

Debbie Rowley's Friendship Gift Boxes

Needlepoint a pretty little ‘Friendship Gift Box’ in September

If you are looking for a delightful gift for a special person, why not make a beautiful little box in that person’s favorite colors?

Our September program will be all about DebBee’s ‘Friendship Gift Boxes,’ by designer Debbie Rowley.  And they are little, which to us, means quick to stitch: “approx 2″ x 2″ x 2″ / use 24-count Congress Cloth Stark White – 2 10″ x 10″ pieces / instructions include 3 colorways.” Or, stitch on 18-count canvas if you prefer. Sign up now to receive a list of all the supplies. This could be a great stash buster!

Gaze at these and sign up by THIS FRIDAY, September 5, by emailing or calling Barb Golubiewski!

We will learn how to finish the box in October. If you have any questions, please contact Barb G.

Needlepoint stitchers take a summer break from meetings

Gloria's finished Seaside Santa! Gloria’s finished Seaside Santa!

In August there is no formal meeting of Colorado Columbine Chapter of ANG, but it certainly does not mean we are not stitching! Summer is a great time for picking new threads, canvases and treating ourselves to some relaxed day-long stitch sessions. See Gloria M.’s fun seaside Santa in its finished standup form, above.

We have new advertisers, so take a peek at the ADVERTISERS tab to see who’s new onboard. Stop by for framing & finishing help and shop for those oh-so-necessary new threads! These people support needlepoint and stitching in all its forms. They are all local businesses, easy to find. Best of all, there is instant gratification when you just need that special color or sparkle to finish a needlepoint canvas!

In September, the program is TINY FRIENDSHIP GIFT BOXES! These adorable, glittery little squares are fast stitching. In October, we will learn how to assemble them and add pretty ribbons. They are so cute, one just may have to stitch all three… how about that for a stash buster?

Join us in September to see what the fun is all about!
