Designer Diane Herrmann was a special guest of the Colorado Columbine Chapter of the American Needlepoint Guild in May as she taught her class on ‘Walking the Water’s Edge.’

Diane’s beautiful design class drew many chapter members and stitchers from other area groups via the Denver Needlework Consortium.
The design is a bargello-based work, with beautiful threads and unusual details:
It’s a first for needlework groups in the Denver Metro area: A one-day event for all four stitching guilds (two chapters of the Embroiderers’ Guild of America and two chapters of the American Needlepoint Guild) to celebrate what they have in common: a love of stitching in all its forms. The Colorado Chapter of EGA is hosting. All interested members will be stitching a needlepoint interpretation by Caela Tyler, adapted from a cross-stitch design by Amy Bruecken Designs called, ‘Witchy-Poo.’

Members of all the guilds knew the very talented designer and needlepointer, Caela Tyler, who died March 24. She loved all the needle arts, and she loved teaching. Her generosity was unmatched. Caela will be terribly missed by her students, friends and fellow-stitchers.

A long-time member of the American Needlepoint Guild, Marcia G., at right in above photo with our president, Gloria M., just celebrated a big birthday and we were all invited. The Colorado Columbine Chapter threw a bash to remember and included all of Marcia’s family and friends to join us in celebrating her milestone.
A gallery of her finished needlepoint was on display, to the delight of all. The array represented only a portion of the needlework that Marcia has produced since about 1976 when she first joined ANG.

This southwest design, stitched in 1984, from the Scottsdale ANG annual seminar, shows a variety of stitches in wool and seems advanced for its era, when most needlepointers used straight tent stitches to carefully cover all canvas intersections.
The desert scene has trapunto, couching, angled stitches, basketweave, beading and more.
Notice the stones near the beaded baskets. The cactus itself is remarkable in its execution. A true work of art by Marcia.
And this canvas was not alone. Members could browse among a couple dozen projects of all shapes, sizes and colors on the display table.
Shown on the display table is Marcia’s very first piece, a little eyeglasses case, colorful and laden with all kinds of patterns and stitches. She designed it herself. It is edged in blue as you can see above. The piece just above it and at left is a bicycle seat! Once, she says she tossed into the wash and it came out beautifully! Marcia’s delight in lighthouses was also present. They are a particular interest of hers.
Marcia has enjoyed many athletic activities such as hiking, bicycling, skiing and traveling all over the world. In fact, she has been to all seven continents on earth. She was secretary of the national American Needlepoint Guild in 1989-1991. She attended her first national convention in Santa Fe in 1978.

Marcia’s friends enjoyed her ‘tour around the table’ as she briefly described each needlepoint piece, its designer and year stitched. Much enjoyment was had by all, who came to celebrate a great stitcher and great friend. Caela T., Toni G. and Karen R. brought a spectacular cake from specialty bakery, Gateaux, which capped off the evening. Of course, Marcia got a rousing rendition of ‘Happy Birthday!’

Our next meeting in March features a class on this lovely spring design:

The Colorado Columbine Chapter of American Needlepoint Guild met in Denver recently for its annual holiday supper. A snowy night did not keep needlepointers at home!
We had a great time and enjoyed some holiday cheer and talked about all the needlepoint projects and activities awaiting in the new year.
October’s meeting was a busy affair and offered many lovely finished items for Show & Tell:
Julie’s amazing grapes canvas was on show, featuring her expert beading and stitch choices. See if these close-ups tell the story:
Beading galore and a breathtaking finish.
More finished needlepoint on this page in future…

Metro Denver’s fastest-growing needlepoint group, the Colorado Columbine Chapter of the American Needlepoint Guild, meets again on October 19 to resume stitching on ‘Snow Crystal Tree,’ a beautiful wintry design from Nancy’s Needle. In the photo above, President Gloria M. leads a brief business meeting before the start of class in September.
Stitchers, how far have you progressed on this beautiful project?
It is a counted-thread design with several sparkly and metallic threads used.
When finished, it makes a snowy winter scene which can be enjoyed all season, no matter the holiday.
Here is our upcoming schedule:
OCTOBER 19: Last touches of ‘Snow Crystal Tree’ will be added — think beads and sparkles! This piece is a wonderful winter design, so it can be enjoyed all season.
NOVEMBER 16: It’s our tradition to enjoy a holiday gathering, so expect an enjoyable social event with your stitching friends, old and new!
DECEMBER: No meetings, but there may be a field trip or two in the works. Watch this space!

Denver’s fastest-growing needlepoint group, the Colorado Columbine Chapter of the American Needlepoint Guild, has members who stitch devotedly AND shape their projects into finished items. Whether a finished piece is framed, puffed into a pillow or structured to stand up for display, needlepoint is meant to be seen and enjoyed. Here are some of the goodies shown at our September meeting!

Julie finished this long-term project, which her sister started, and sought a different way to finish it. She located an old firescreen for sale online and spruced up the wood. Her extraordinary Halloween needlepoint piece (beads! tricky stitches! variegated threads!) is on permanent display in it. Can we all agree it is a most effectual way to show a large work? Si! Here is a closer view, which, of course, all want want to see:

And, many in the group have been diligently working on their Libby Sturdy-designed Santas. Well, SOME of us have finished him… and here is Mary M’s adorable guy, close up and shown proudly by his stitcher.

Well, we had more to ogle, when Carolyn showed off her adorable Witches’ Hats piece designed by Caela Tyler. She had great fun stitching it!

Here is our upcoming schedule:
